The purpose of this study is to identify Twitter (X) and Instagram’s deceptive or manipulative strategies which contribute to lengthened scrolling sessions on their apps. This research is concerned with the following questions, with reference to literature on the infinite scroll, what is said about mobile design interfaces?; with an empirical focus on the iOS Mobile instantiations of X and Instagram, what design interface strategies seem to lengthen scrolling sessions?; and what design features seem to be particularly effective at increasing time-on-device through the Instagram Explore page and the Twitter (X) For you timeline?
